When something new comes out of the market pertaining to your industry, are the first one out of the gate? Are you the one to try it out and implement it into your business? If you’re like most people, you’d want to test the waters before you jump in; you may like to wait and see what happens.

While being an early adopter has its perks, it also has its downsides. Here are three ways to become an effective early adopter.

  1. Stay away from shiny objects.

One of the downsides of being an early adopter is if you look at shiny objects. Rather than adopting just about anything that comes out of the market, you have to be strategic on what you adopt. You will need a plan in doing so because being an early adopter is not about trying something new, take it on for five minutes, and then throw it away because ‘it didn’t work’. That’s just a waste of time and resources.

  1. Set a plan.

If you want to implement a new system or process into your business, you need to plan it strategically. Let’s say you just discovered a new technology that lets you put videos on your website seamlessly and you plan on incorporating it into your business. What is your plan around doing that? How often are you going to post videos? Weekly? Monthly? What are you going to talk about? You need to be able to devise a plan to make it work.

The other thing you need to work out in your plan is what stays and what goes. This means that you have to figure out whether you need to add or deduct a certain amount of time you spend in one area of your business. Make sure that at the end of the way, you’re spending more time on the things that matter in your business.

  1. Take action.

What do you need to do to implement your plan? For example, if you want to become a speaker, you need to find out what you need to do so you can do to become a speaker who shares their passion, knowledge, and stories to other people.

Perhaps you might need to find a mentor or a coach, someone who knows what they are doing and transition you from working in a business to now becoming an educator, speaker, mentor, or coach for other people.
