“My mother told me to follow my dreams, so I went back to sleep,” says one funny phrase I came across some time ago.
Some, if not most, people are like this when it comes to following their dreams. They are figuratively “sleeping” on their dreams. They are doing nothing, they keep putting off doing something to make their dreams a reality. They keep putting off on acting on their dreams until tomorrow or until another day, until their dreams become just that — only dreams. This is called procrastination.
“Why do I procrastinate?” is a question that most people ask themselves. This may be a question that may have bothered you at some point.
There are several reasons why people procrastinate: lack of motivation, lack of skills, boredom, to avoid stress, fear of failure, to name a few. Whatever your reasons are for procrastinating, you have to remember one important thing: you only have one life to live. So, start acting on your dreams and live the life you’ve always dreamed of.
Schedule your time wisely
We often hear the adage, “Time is gold”. Indeed, it is. You can never get back the time lost because of procrastination. No matter the amount of effort you put in afterwards, come crunch time, you’ll probably still miss doing things that needed to be done. The end result? You’ll probably be unsuccessful at the endeavor or goal that you had set out to accomplish.
“We all have the same 24 hours in a day,” a well-known motivational speaker said. Learning how to use these hours is the key in managing your time.
It’s not about multi-tasking or doing several tasks at once. It’s all about prioritizing things. List the things or tasks to do, set deadlines for the tasks, and work on the tasks based on their level of urgency or importance, then focus on working on the tasks one at a time. If you must, break bigger tasks into smaller ones.
Get rid of distractions
Unless your job involves doing some social media-related stuff, then social media is one distraction that you can do without. When you’re doing some tasks, refrain from checking social media feeds, sharing posts, tweeting, or posting.
You should also consider getting rid of other distractions. For instance, you may want to disable notifications that you don’t need, create rules to filter useless or spam emails, etc. Getting rid of distractions will help you to focus on working on your tasks.
Surround yourself with optimistic people. Their positivity will surely rub off on you. Soon enough, you will be able to face challenges — be it in life, business, career, or other areas — head on and with a can-do attitude.
Surround yourself with goal-oriented people. You should also share your goals and plans with trusted friends, colleagues, or family. You may be able to gain some ideas or insights on how to best reach your goals or plans.
Be around people whom you admire and who will inspire you. These people have troves of experience and wisdom that you can learn from.
Stop procrastinating and get moving now towards making your dream a reality. There are a lot of things that you can accomplish when you manage your time wisely, get rid of distractions, or find motivation from people around you. These are just some of the things that you can do to move forward.
